Cartridge-blown gusts of breath form small pockets of air that bubble to the surface of the brine, proccing wind eddies across the nearby island all the way up to its arid peaks. Water sloshing, waves crashing. Toms erratic and ecstatic. Pockets of serenity.

On MAUNA KEA, CRWSH wallhacks his way into a mixed reality, offering to the listener an isometrically rendered tropical island soundtracked by in-game field recordings. Loosely inspired by equal sections of Reefsong by Carol Severance, The Hawaiian Archipelago by Isabella L., Wikipedia and Hawaiian mythology, MAUNA KEA takes you on a theory-crafted journey from the deepwater trenches of the North Pacific to the archipelago’s titular peak.

The EP’s five-track selection arranges complex compositions of sound textures into a sweeping, mysterious utopia. Lush swathes of seemingly haphazard data reveal themselves as carefully planted conversation trees under which voyagers are invited to relax and wonder. Tracks are thrust forward by rhythms simultaneously alien and comforting, interspersed with nervous clicks and fits gnawing at the edge of consciousness. Always unbending before the next hike.

MAUNA KEA’s natural progression creates the auditory equivalent of a compulsion loop, drawing the listener deeper into its ecosystem through a feedback system offering increasing rewards upon each visit. Rise up from the ocean floor alongside friendly mesopelagic organisms into the volcanic troposphere before being submerged again into the vast ocean expanses, lying in wait to be cast onto the atoll shore once more.

Explore, expand, exploit and exult.

// Maarten Van Overveldt (CRWSH) on the process behind the EP “The starting point for the musical elements were two live coding streams I did for The Word Radio and EulerRoom Equinox 2020. Ornamental field recordings and sound design were added afterwards to create an excess of stimuli. As a final step a cluster of layers were scraped on the right spot to zoom in on the main gesture at that given time.”
